About Random Acts Presents

Random Acts Presents v3

Throughout April 2017-March 2018, Random Acts Presents screens an exciting selection of short films by young artist filmmakers aged 16-24 in cinemas across England. From animation and comedy, to dance and spoken word – these bold and creative short films reflect the mosaic of contemporary life in England through the lens of its young artists.

The films

These innovative, thought-provoking films range from 90 seconds to 3 minutes in length. They are available in curated packages – collated by theme, region and genre – to be presented in one screening, or as individual shorts to screen before feature-length films. The films span a range of art forms and topics – from the refugee crisis to the monotony of the jobcentre and the thrill of a zombie apocalypse. Without preconceptions, filmmakers are challenging norms and carving out space for a wide range of on- and off-screen talent with bold expressions of creativity.

The project

The films screened in Random Acts Presents are the result of commissioning opportunities enabled by the five Random Acts network centres: StopPlayRecord (London), Calling the Shots (South West), Ignition Random Acts (South East),  Rural Media Company (Midlands) and Random Acts Network Centre North.

The project is a joint initiative by Arts Council England and Channel 4 Random Acts, and many of the short films have been broadcast by Channel 4 on television or online.

The project develops talent by offering film education, training, production support and funding to 16-24 year-olds to produce their short film. By 2018, 360 films will have been made and screened to audiences nationwide.

Random Acts Presents tours concurrently with Playback. Playback showcases the 145 short films made in the first year of the programme in one interactive exhibition. Beginning in March 2017 at the ICA in London with an accompanying festival of events aimed at emerging artist filmmakers, the exhibition is currently touring to galleries, libraries and multi-arts venues until March 2018.
